This thesis fills this gap in the literature by adopting an integrative perspective of the leadership theory. Previous research addressing this phenomenon has traditionally adopted a single approach (i.e., traits, skills, or behaviors). A servant leader is never selective in whom he/she desires to help even enemies receive the full service of such leaders….Leaders are involved in the process of influencing people to achieve corporate goals that sustain high-performance over time. Secular leaders are known only to empathize when they are in mourning or need something from the people such as votes (Sendjaya, Sarros, & Santora, 2008). Compassion: Unlike most leaders of today, empathy is a constant trait of servant leaders. The primary purpose of a servant leader is not only to serve, but to identify the needs of the followers and this is only possible through listening. Heeding: Secular leaders have been appreciated for their communication and decision-making skills which are all important for servant leaders, however, they need to be secured by the deep warrant to listen to the followers (Sendjaya, Sarros, & Santora, 2008).A few will be described as they are deemed the most contentious compared to secular leadership. Characteristics of a Servant Leaderįrom the analysis of Robert Greenleaf’s book, several features of a servant leader portrayed. In Robert Greenleaf’s text, he described the values and characters of a servant leader and how they differ with secular leaders. However, he was the head of the Order that sponsored the journey (Keith, 2016). Years later, one of the travelers saw Leo again. Therefore they could not continue with the journey. However, one day, Leo just disappeared and left the travelers in dismay. The story focused on a group of travelers and their servant Leo, who did the tedious tasks and entertained the travelers with his spirit and song. The motivation for this ideology came from a previously published book, Journey to the East by Herman Hesse (Keith, 2016). He then clarifies that being a servant leader is not about being submissive and weak, but being able to overcome ego and have a desire to help others. In the book, he explained who a servant leader is and what he/she desires to do, and that serves the people. Fast forward to the 20 th century, servant leadership was characterized and described by Robert Greenleaf in his book The Servant as Leader which was first published in 1970 (Dierendonck & Patterson, 2010). By not being an authority figure as a leader but by being a servant willing to serve the followers through humility, kindness and other peaceful and submissive gestures. The ideas are that they want to change the perception of the world and its leaders as did the Jesus in the new testament of the bible. The practice of servant leadership has been a notion that the church has tried to instill in the minds of the followers through several training sessions. Servant leadership has been known for over two centuries with the prime motivator being the Christian religion, with guidelines being given to followers in several chapters and sections in their religious book the bible (Dierendonck & Patterson, 2010).
